Help/Discussion

See the Mod Compatibility forum.

More mods Some individual users also have testing-in-progress notes about many more mods, e.g. here.

Introduction

Once you have played through unmodded Morrowind and its expansions, you probably want to add some spice to your next playthrough: thousands of modifications (mods) are available to enhance the overall gameplay, adjust the game mechanics to your tastes, or simply improve the graphics quality. There also are mods which add new landscapes and quests – and some are proper total conversions (TCs), stand-alone games taking Morrowind's engine as a basis.

The OpenMW project has set one of its main goals to provide compatibility with each and every Morrowind mod which

  • is a pure replacer or a modification created with the original Construction Set,
  • doesn't rely on third-party software or other engine hacks,
  • doesn't contain any severe scripting errors or other crucial design flaws.

Our engine is, of course, not perfect and certain mods may fail to load or may show unexpected behaviour. If you encounter any bugs with a mod, please report them at our bugtracker or at our forums (newbies should check out our Bug Reporting Guidelines). Additionally, we have created this page to keep track of tested Morrowind mods and provide information about issues related to each of these mods.

Status indicators

This page contains a list of catalogued Morrowind mods and a list of catalogued Morrowind utilities – both with extra information about certain famous mods or utilities respectively – as well as an overview of OpenMW-exclusive mods. In this context, we use several icons to indicate the working status of a mod:

Table 1. Status indicators
Works fine. The mod works as in vanilla Morrowind; there may be a couple of warning messages written to the error log but nothing that affects the mod's functionality.
Partially working, has non-trivial issues. Most parts of the mod work as expected. There are (minor) issues though, but nothing with serious impact on gameplay. See the description text for bug references or workarounds.
Currently broken. There are major problems with this mod which have a noticeable impact on gameplay. These issues should get fixed in the future – see the description text for bug references or workarounds.
Needs re-testing.There have been problems with this mod. Certain bug-fixes or version releases may have fixed some/all issues, but nobody has re-tested the mod yet.
Currently being tested.(Mainly for large mods.) The mod is in active testing. It may take the tester(s) a while to complete their task.
Will never work with OpenMW.Due to relying on third-party software, like MWSE or MGE, or because of severe scripting errors the mod isn't compatible with OpenMW. To make it compatible, the mod authors need to fix their mod or clear third-party dependencies. Moreover, some third-party features may have already been implemented in OpenMW – but don't hope for that!
Not tested yet.The mod hasn't been tested yet; maybe someone plans to do so later.

Mod installation

OpenMW uses a more flexible method for installing mods. Check out our Mod installation Wiki page here.

Mod sources

The OpenMW team does not provide any mods or external mod tools. However, there are a couple of great mod libraries for TES III: Morrowind (this list is not exhaustive):

Further information and discussion

Anyone who is a member of the Wiki group can add details of mods they have tested; see the forum's User Control Panel and assign yourself to the group in order to get access.

We also have a Mod Compatibility subforum where any issues can be discussed thoroughly.

If you want to test Morrowind mods in OpenMW but don't know how to start, check out our Mod testing guidelines page. If you already know how to properly test mods in OpenMW, please check this page out too because it also contains information regarding posting your test results.

Working status of existing Morrowind mods

The following list of "tested", "test in progress", "needs re-testing", or "not tested yet" mods makes no claim to be complete. Every Morrowind modification fulfilling the requirements mentioned above should work with OpenMW. The statements made about a mod's working status refer to a clean OpenMW installation, only using the particular mod and its required content files.

Meskoa Particle Weapons N 1.0 FIM Works fine. OpenMW 0.42.0 2017/08/01 Frik Works as intended; no console outputs.
Morrowind Advanced N 1.82 Stromgarde Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Loriel Aug 2017 No obvious problems.
Morrowind Children N 1.0 LegoManIAm94 Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Verification shows 4 script warnings in 3 scripts, where "elseif" has been used where I think "if" was intended, so results may not be as intended. Pickpocket attempts, and quest progress.
Morrowind Comes Alive N 8.2 Neoptolemus Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Aug 2017 Loriel As reported by Tinker on OpenMW 0.35.0, OpenMW-CS reports various problems. Bug #2180 is fixed in 0.34.0 although other issues discussed may still be valid, mainly missing data in the mod, giving numerous validation errors, also conflicts with CharGen Revamped mod causing character generation to happen twice. Nevertheless it appears to function with no major problems.
Morrowind Containers Animated N 1.2 qqqbbb Works fine. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. <unknown> Everything works without issues.
Morrowind Crafting W
fixed Version W
2.1 Tocatta Works fine. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. Tinker New version supplied by Tocatta, with fixed scripts.
Tester - Tinker
Getting an infinite loop when trying to mine while on 0.37 Dev Revision 681cbaf0. Tester - NtM
Morrowind Rebirth DN 4.13 Trancemaster_1988 Works fine. OpenMW 0.42.0 2017/08/02 Thunderforge Author says it is compatible with OpenMW. It requires MCP for vanilla Morrowind in order to support (real) bump maps, but since OpenMW handles them already, it is compatible.
Multiple Teleport Marking M 2.2 hessi9 Currently broken. OpenMW 0.40.0 n.a. <unknown> Does not appear to work at all. See these threads for some investigation. There is now a modified (working) version at N . It clashes with Morrowind Rebirth and needs to be loaded after it - Loriel.
Nastier Camonna Tong M 1.2 Von Djangos Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Just a dialog replacer. Numerous missing voice files, otherwise it should work as intended.
Nevena's Twin Lamps and Slave Hunters M 1.5 Nevena Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Errors and warnings in verification in CS, but none should have any effect in the game.
NPC Additions M 1.11 x Starfire X Works fine. OpenMW 0.33.0 n.a. <unknown> Works as expected, but note that it uses leveled lists which are not easily merged in OpenMW yet.
NX9 Guards Complete N 1.0 NazoX9 Works fine. OpenMW 0.42.0 2017/08/26 Centrello Works as described. No console errors.
Oblivion Style Vampires N 1.2 DoctorEss Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel CS verification reveals no errors or warnings.
Pegas Horse Ranch M 3.1 MadMax Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.41.0 2017/02/21 Elderking1986 Works mostly as intended; does show a few errors in openmw.log but it seems to work as it did in vanilla Morrowind except for one thing. While you are riding your horse, the horse has a collision detection problem, causing it to fall through terrain and travel on the water level.
Propylon Index Chest M 1.2 Jon Davison Works fine. OpenMW 0.41.0 2017/01/18. Durisat Works as intended.
Protective Guards M 1.3 Fliggerty Will never work with OpenMW. Requires MWSE, which is incompatible with OpenMW.
Province: Cyrodiil N 01 Province: Cyrodiil Team Not tested yet. ? ? ? Needs to be tested because it's on the Top 10 Morrowind Mods of 2017. Requires Tamriel Data
Racer Recursion N 1.0 Satan
Trainwiz
Works fine. OpenMW 0.34.0 n.a. <unknown> Seems to work as intended. Occasionally shows "Lolmoreracers" message without any cliff racers multiplying in sight.
Random Passive Cliffracers M 1.0 DoctorEss Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Aug 2017 Loriel Appears to work as intended - though passive cliffracers are rare.
Redoran Door Fix M 1.0 Mudcrab Merchant Works fine. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/10/06 Atahualpa Works as intended; no console outputs.
Please note that this does not fix anything regarding the Redoran Stronghold but rather changes the doors of the Redoran Council Hall in Under-Skar, Ald'ruhn.
Ring of weightless touch M 1.0 Delophreaus Works fine. OpenMW 0.39.0 n.a. Durisat Works as intended.
Sell N Sail Galleon M 1.0 Emberwolf & Solanaceae Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Errors in 2 scripts, boat_script and ship_script, missing ";" comment marker at beginning of divider lines. Other errors and warnings should have no effect.
Seyda Neen Expanded M 1.0 Strider Works fine. OpenMW 0.40.0 Nov 2016 Fizzol Seems to work as intended. No obvious issues.
Ship Masters of Solstheim N 1.1 Frik Works fine. OpenMW 0.41.0 2016/12/31 Frik Works as intended; no console outputs.
Ships of the Imperial Navy N 2.0 Neoptolemus Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 2017 ? See bug #3950 (this issue can be workarounded - just use a fixed mesh, attached to the bugreport).
Shrines - Restore Health and Cancel Options N 1.0 Skrawafunda Works fine. OpenMW 0.35.1 n.a. Tinker All functions appear to work as expected.
Shut Up! M N/A Adul aka Adam Zsoldos Will never work with OpenMW. Requires MWSE, which is incompatible with OpenMW.
Silt Striders N 1.16 abot Needs re-testing. OpenMW 0.41.0 2016/12/26 Amenophis Mostly works. Has problems with animations (Striders legs don't move while travelling) and collision detection (Striders fall through terrain and travel on the water level).
Silt Strider Armor M 1.75 Melchior Dahrk Works fine. OpenMW 0.41.0 2017/02/23 Arashi Aganawa Works as intended. When you have the shield from the cavern of the incarnate, it seems to show up black on the "paper doll" in the inventory screen, but appears fine when you see yourself in third person, or see it while in first. Weapons tested as well, they work fine, and the guards spawn with both unecnanted and enchanted versions as they should (they have one or the other, not both).
Sixth House Mod M 2.03 Endrek Not tested yet. ? ? ? ?
Skyrim crafting for Morrowind N 0.3 Mike Currently broken. OpenMW 0.35.1 n.a. Tinker Bug #2185 is partially fixed in 0.35.0 version, but a space between operators is still reported as an error. Other two script issues need to be fixed by mod author who has restarted work on the mod and is aware of problems.
Skyrim: Home of the Nords N 02 SHOTN Team Not tested yet. ? ? ? Needs to be tested because it's on the Top 10 Morrowind Mods of 2017
Sleepers Awake N 1.1 Adul
Von Djangos
Currently broken. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/10/30 Atahualpa This mod will never work properly because of OpenMW handling the "Say" command differently. The vanilla game simply plays new audio tracks over old ones, while OpenMW stops the current audio track, starts the new one, and displays the given subtitles. See this forum thread for a solution (involving a bit of modding).
Suran Underworld M 2.5 Matthew Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Errors and warnings in CS verification, but should have no impact on gameplay.
(Clean) Tales of Seyda Neen M 1.2 Denunci Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel One npc (den_an_drazh) has a non-existent class, and probably won't appear. No other problems apparent.
Tales of Tel Branora M 1 A P Hilliard Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Two npcs (my_serula and my_zeta) have non-existent items in inventory. No other problems apparent.
Tamriel Data N 04 Cross-Project Coordination Not tested yet. ? ? ? Needs to be tested because it's on the Top 10 Morrowind Mods of 2017
Tamriel Rebuilt A 16.03 Tamriel Rebuilt Team Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. Tinker Mostly working as expected. Preview sections have not been tested in OpenMW, users are advised to check the Tamriel Rebuilt site for details of progress.
Telvanni Lighthouse Tel Vos N 1.3 Resdayn Revival Team Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 2017/9/3 Fizzol Add 'fallback-archive=RR_Telvanni_Lighthouse_Tel Vos.bsa' to openmw.cfg to register bsa. Works with no console output.
The Black Mill M 1.0 Bilbo WillowTree Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Numerous errors when verifying in CS. Most will have no effect, but several scripts will fail to run due to syntax errors.
The Black Queen Chronicles M 2.5 Tenaka Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Numerous errors when verifying in CS. Most will have no effect, but several scripts will fail to run due to syntax errors - generally functions called with wrong parameters.
The Clockwork City M 1.0 Aeven Works fine. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/10/06 Atahualpa Works as intended; no console outputs.
The Counting Plume N 1.0 Trainwiz Works fine. OpenMW 0.35.1 n.a. <unknown> Seems to work as expected.
The Glory Road M 1.0 Kathryn & Tommy Khajiit Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Numerous errors when verifying in CS. Most will have no effect, but 14 scripts will fail to run due to typoes.
The Island - Aln'Baldrahn N 1.20 Melchior Dahrk Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 2017/9/3 Fizzol Works fine with no console output.
The Sable Dragon N 1.7 Pluto28 Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. Tinker OpenMW-CS displays errors related to races added by the mod and script-related errors. Error log reports many errors.
The Underground M 2.0 Qarl Currently broken. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Numerous errors and warnings from verification in CS. Many will be harmless, but the script errors will prevent scripts running in numerous cases.
The White Wolf Of The Lokken Mountain E 2.1 Emma Needs re-testing. OpenMW 0.41.0 n.a. TimMB Had a number of scripting errors and minor issues. I corrected the issues I found in openMW-CS and am testing now. Will provide omwaddon if anyone is interested in testing it. OpenMW 0.42 fixed a major problem with name clashes - other issues should be minor - Loriel
Trade Disputes [Fixed] M 1.5a dalin Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42.0 2017/9/3 Fizzol Was able to start the quest, but stepping on the rug in either lookout tower causes you to fall through the floor.
Tribunal Delayed N 1.0 Cine Works fine. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/11/10 Steve Odom Works fine, no console outputs.
Twin Lamps M Tribunal 1.1 Brother Juniper Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.42 Sep 2017 Loriel Script TL_invasion errors (wrong syntax/usage for ModFactionReaction), plus numerous script warnings, mostly for if(getdisabled "SomeName" == 1) [ignored] instead of if("SomeName"->getdisabled == 1).
Turenyulal Redone N 1.0 Trainwiz Works fine. OpenMW 0.42 2017/9/3 Fizzol Six book cover textures exist but fail to load, works fine otherwise.
Ules Farm N
Abot's fix A
1.1 Crankgorilla Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. Tinker Mostly working with updated esp file. The well is still untextured (see Bug 2277) and there are a few warnings in the error logs. See initial bug report for more information: Bug 2032. Version 1.1 released January 2015 fixes many problems, and Abot's esp fixes most major problems.
Uncle Sweet's Cellar N 1.4 Frik Works fine. OpenMW 0.41.0 2016/12/26 Frik Works as intended; no console outputs.
Unique Tombs M 1.2 tronvillain Works fine. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/10/06 Atahualpa Works as intended; no console outputs.
Uvirith's Legacy F 3.42 Stuporstar Needs re-testing. OpenMW 0.39.0 n.a. Xandaros Mostly works. Exceptions being; the script for the alchemy take has a syntax error rendering it a normal container, the rituals for the inscription quills (during a sidequest) do not work, and there are some texture problems new to 0.39. The Bag of Holding used to be broken, but in 0.39 only needs to be used outside the main container room and the main container activated per each use.
Water Life N 1.21 abot Works fine. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. Tinker Several script warnings for PlaceItem using an explicit reference that is ignored. Several missing attack and idle animations. Many parts do work such as fishing, though maybe not as in vanilla. Shells, starfish and coins often just appear as a bounding box and it seems none can be harvested.
Update Nov 2017 by Loriel (OpenMW 0.43 RC1) - Script warnings can be ignored, as can the "Missing Name" errors. There is a script error, faulty messagebox syntax in ab01wlcrShipWreckScript, but that appears to be in debug mode and shouldn't interfere with gameplay. I saw no sign of missing animations or missing bounding boxes. Status therefore upgraded from "Issues" to "Working".
Weapon Compilation Mod M 2.0 Farrp Currently broken. OpenMW 0.36.1 n.a. <unknown> Weapons cannot be added to NPCs via leveled list (related to Bug 2404). Initialization script fails when exiting the Census and Excise Office.
Welcome to the Arena N 6.6 Kalamestari_69 Partially working, has non-trivial issues. OpenMW 0.35.0 n.a. <unknown> First battle will commence succesfully, but the game will not allow you to leave the Arena afterwards (lockpicking and going back in results in disqualification). Log reports multiple script errors.
Where are all birds going? N 1.18 abot Needs re-testing. OpenMW 0.41.0 2017/1/15 GameEnder Pathing problems. Flying creatures spawn correctly, but they follow ground NPC path nodes instead of staying in the air. See bug #3587. EDIT: should work with OpenMW 0.44.

Mods using fake bump maps

The Morrowind Code Patch (MCP) made it possible to use so-called fake bump maps in vanilla Morrowind. Apart from these maps not achieving the quality of real bump maps, our engine has a problem with this approach: The fake bump maps method import the normal map in an environment map block in the .nif-file. Both OpenMW and vanilla Morrowind will with this approach display the model with very shiny textures. MCP is used with vanilla Morrowind to "fix" this by darkening all the environment maps. However, our engine natively supports real bump maps (specifically the type called normal maps) which renders the hacky MCP version obsolete anyway.

Our member lysol has created a tutorial on how to get rid of these shiny textures in OpenMW.

To cut a long story short: Mods using fake bump maps will always appear very shiny in OpenMW. This can only be fixed by editing the textures/meshes.

Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul (MGSO)

Morrowind Overhaul: Sounds & Graphics a.k.a. MGSO is one of the biggest and most famous Morrowind mod compilations ever made. It consists of a mere 300 mods (give or take a few) and integrates well-known utilities like the Morrowind Code Patch (MCP) and the Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE). It comes with its own installer which allows players to adjust everything to their tastes.

Unfortunately, OpenMW does not support installer-based modifications like MGSO rendering this masterpiece basically incompatible with OpenMW. You may set up MGSO on your vanilla Morrowind installationn though, import your data and mod list to OpenMW, and hope for the best.

In any case, we've added many of the corresponding mods to the mod list above; check out the full mod list on our MGSO WIki page. (The original list was formerly available at the authors' website but has somehow vanished.)

Utilities for vanilla Morrowind

There are quite a few third-party utilities for Morrowind which allow players to increase the game's graphical quality, tweak its performance, or adjust the load order of content files. While most of these programs are not compatible with OpenMW, some of them may be used to "prepare" an existing Morrowind installation and port the results to OpenMW. At your own risk, of course.

Please note that the meaning of the status indicators is a bit different compared to the other lists (hover over icons to see their meanings).

Animation Kit N 2.1 LizTail Usable. OpenMW 0.40.0 2016/10/20 Atahualpa Works as intended. Just use it with your vanilla installation of Morrowind.
BSA Unpacker MW N 1.0 Timeslip Usable. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa OpenMW does not alter the .bsa format. Hence, modders can simply use this modification to extract files from .bsa files and use them in OpenMW-CS.
ESP Cleaner N ? Horatio Usable. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa OpenMW does not alter the .esp format. Accordingly, mod creators and players can use this tool to clean .esp files and use them with OpenMW. Please note that OpenMW provides its own file formats ".omwaddon" and ".omwgame" which replace ".esp" and ".esm" respectively for content created with OpenMW-CS. These files do not work with ESP Cleaner.
mlox N 0.61 JohnMoonsugar Not recommended. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to find the optimal load order for your mods on your original Morrowind installation, then keep your fingers crossed and manually transfer the resulting load order to the OpenMW launcher.
Morrowind Code Patch N 2.2 Hrnchamd
Psyringe
Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa Not compatible with OpenMW; see our MCP Wiki page for further information.
Morrowind Enhanced A 1.6 aerelorn Will never work with OpenMW. - 2017/6/20 Thunderforge Not compatible with OpenMW; designed to only work alongside vanilla Morrowind.exe
Morrowind FPs Optimizer N 1.0 Alexander Stasenko Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa This utility only works with the original Morrowind process which makes it incompatible with OpenMW. The possibility to dynamically adjust the rendering quality depending on the FPS is a nice idea though – and not possible in OpenMW yet.
Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE) N 3.8.0 LizTail
Timeslip
Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa Not compatible with OpenMW; see our MGE XE Wiki page for further information.
Morrowind Graphics Extender XE (MGE XE) N 0.9.10 Hrnchamd Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa Not compatible with OpenMW; see our MGE XE Wiki page for further information.
Morrowind Mod Manager N 1.0 Timeslip Almost useless. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to mess around with your original Morrowind installation. However, launching OpenMW via the "Launch Morrowind" button is not possible (obviously) which drastically decreases the program's usability.
Morrowind Plugin Manager N 1.2 DW Not recommended. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to install mods to your original Morrowind installation and make adjustments to your load order and stuff there, finally setting the exact same load order in the OpenMW launcher. However, OpenMW provides its own way of installing mods making it possible to use as many data folders as you want to, while adjusting the load order at will in our launcher.
Morrowind Resolution Fixer N 1.0 DarkWolfModding Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa Not compatible with OpenMW but our engine provides support for all common screen resolutions anyway.
(To be honest, this software doesn't even work with my original Morrowind installation. And messing around with the registry isn't very user-friendly to say the least.)
Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE) M 0.94a AnthonyG
Fliggerty
Will never work with OpenMW. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa Not compatible with OpenMW; see our MWSE Wiki page for further information.
TES Plugin Tool (TESTool) M 1.0 ghostwheel Almost useless. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to mess around with your original Morrowind installation. Please note that OpenMW does not support merging leveled lists.
TESIniTweaker N 3.5.2 Moorindal Not recommended. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to adjust the settings in your Morrowind.ini file and, then import the modified .ini file from within the OpenMW launcher. Please note that doing so may lead to certain settings in your OpenMW settings file getting overwritten.
TESPCD N 0.31 Ely Soto Usable. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool with unclean or conflicting mods in order to get the issues solved.
Wrye Mash N 84 Wrye Almost useless. - 2016/10/03 Atahualpa You may use this tool to mess around with your original Morrowind installation. Please note that OpenMW savegames aren't compatible with vanilla ones and, thus, cannot be managed via Wrye Mash. The infamous doubling bug doesn't occur in OpenMW.

Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE)

This utility greatly expands the scripting capabilities of the original Morrowind engine. See our MWSE Wiki page for further information.

Morrowind Graphics Extender (MGE / MGE XE)

These utilities improve Morrowind overall graphical quality, make it possible to control certain graphics settings via scripts, and add several new features to the original engine, e.g., a variety of shaders. See our MGE XE Wiki page for more information.

Morrowind Code Patch (MCP)

This utility fixes a good amount of buggy or poorly-written game mechanics, many engine bugs, and brings a bunch of new (optional) features to vanilla Morrowind. See our MCP Wiki page to learn more.

OpenMW-exclusive mods

For the time being, this list keeps track of all OpenMW-exclusive mods available to the public. This section will be moved to a new page when modders' productivity exceeds a certain level (i.e., when there is a decent amount of OpenMW-only content).

Credits also go to the great Morrowind modding community which is still active after all these years. Finally, special thanks go to all the mod testers who made this page feel like a true list of tested mods rather than a small selection of user-created content.
